Box mods are electronic devices used to vaporize e-liquids. These require an atomizer or tank to function and use the same type of connector. They are the most technologically advanced products, surpassing vape pens, cig-a-likes, pod vaporizers and disposable e-cigarettes.
To understand how mods work we need to dive deeper into their technology. For most mods you will have to put batteries in. These are sold separately. Other devices come with a built-in battery that cannot be replaced. Each of these models have their own pros and cons and it's up to the user to decide what product would better suit his or her needs.
Box mods with replaceable batteries offer versatility, longer life-span and usually more power. The disadvantage is that you need to pay extra for the cells, you might need a desktop charger and carrying around spare batteries takes a lot of pocket space.
On the other hand, mods with built in batteries don't have additional costs. They may not be as powerful or versatile as the first category but for beginners or intermediate vapers this won't make any difference in terms of vapor production and flavor. The downside is that once the battery has been recharged over a number of cycles it will become obsolete and so will the mod.
Most box mods today come with various features. Variable wattage is the most important and it allows the user to gradually adjust device's output. This is crucial because the wide majority of tanks and atomizers only work at certain wattages. It also gives more control on the overall vape experience, such as vapor temperature, quantity and flavor.
Another important feature is temperature control. This setting works with certain types of wire like nickel, titanium and stainless steel and allows full control on the vape temperature. This ensures that the cotton never gets fully dry and prevents burning.
Power curves are also important when the coils have a big ramp up time and require pre-heating. With power curves the user can adjust the wattage for each second of the vape from the first press of the button to the end of the cut-off interval.
Safety features are also extremely important and many mods today offer short circuit protection, reverse polarity protection, low voltage protection, low resistance protection and temperature protection.
Not all box mod are created equal. Some offer only the most basic features, while others put the user in full control over the vape experience.
Entry level mods are suitable for beginners and these offer limited features and low outputs. They are packed with safety features and are the simplest to use. These have either an internal cell or work with a single 18650 battery. Usually they work between 20 – 50W to match the output of beginner's tanks and atomizers. The most important feature of these mods is variable wattage.
Mid-range box mods are great for intermediate vapers, but beginners can also use them. These are a bit more powerful and come with more features. Besides variable wattage they also offer temperature control and can work with either one or two batteries. They usually have an output between 50 – 100W and can be used with a wider range of sub ohm tanks and atomizers.
Pro level mods are the most advanced and these are usually intended for long-time vapers. They mostly work with removable batteries and offer all the high end features. Besides variable voltage and temperature control they also have TCR options, power or temperature curves and a Bypass mode. They are bigger, more powerful and their output ranges between 100 – 300W. These devices are intended to be used with equally powerful sub ohm tanks and rebuildable atomizers and deliver the most impressive amount of vapor.
